Tupac Back!

2pac, Dr. Dre, Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Doggy Dog, Wiz Khalifa

Reason #112 to move to SoCal – at this year’s Coachella festival, Tupac put on his most recent performance. Granted, he was a hologram, but does that really detract from his legacy?

(Update 4/20-Working Video Link)

Good Lord. I hope I have abs like that if I ever get resurrected as a hologram. I can’t even lie, when I peeped this vid for the first time, I got cold chills running up and down my spine.

How did they do it? This quote from http://www.TheVerge.com nails it:

“The performance reportedly used the same technology that enabled Mariah Carey to perform a concert in five cities simultaneously. Executing the Carey illusion relied on both modern day techniques and an old magician’s trick dating back to the 19th Century. First, a video was composed by New York SFX company MPC using a mixture of live footage, wire-framing, and CGI. This was then fed into Musion’s holographic technology, which projects the image onto a special foil. The foil is based on principles set out in the old magician’s illusion Pepper’s Ghost, which trick audiences into thinking they’re viewing a person or object rather than a simple reflection. By using a lightweight foil which mimics the properties of semi-transparent glass, Musion is able to extend the concept’s scale without limiting the efficacy of the illusion. The results, as you can see in the video below, are pretty spectacular.”

Dr. Dre, Snoop, Wiz, Tony Yayo, Kurupt, Kendrick Lamar (check the vid after the jump), Eminem, 50 Cent, and Warren G all made appearances at the show. The fans were a motley crew that grew up on these rapper’s music; they sung along with every word to every song. I can imagine that the feeling at this show was incredible…

In other news, I was riding with a buddy (shoutout to Mr. ALbert!) a couple days ago and he puts this track on.

Kendrick Lamar played this song at Coachella, also; if you grab the live stream of the show, you’ll hear it on there. This track is actually produced by Scoop DeVille; Dre appears on the track. Detox 2060 is going to be bangin’ when it comes out if this track is any indication. Supposedly, Dre’s worked with dude and has recorded a slew of tracks with him. Kendrick Lamar’s got guest rappers as diverse as the Dogg Pound to Tech N9ne.

So what do you think of Kendrick Lamar and Tupac’s holographic resurrection? Mouth off in the comments, players.
